On May 5th, the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority shared its recommendation to award the next Metro Bike Share contract to Lyft Urban Solutions. This is an exciting opportunity for us to bring our experience providing bikeshare services in some of the largest cities around the world to Los Angeles and serve its many communities.
"Lyft Urban Solutions is honored that LACMTA has placed their confidence in us and we are ready to get to work to accelerate bikeshare adoption across Los Angeles. Our proposal for the next chapter of Metro Bike Share includes proven hardware and software that powers bikeshare in 57 cities across 16 countries, and a community engagement and operations approach that empowers trusted local leaders like BikeHub, Arellano Associates, and BikeLA. With upcoming events like the World Cup and Olympics putting the city on a global stage, Lyft is ready to help Metro Bike Share welcome residents and visitors alike.” - Michael Brous, Head of Lyft Urban Solutions.
Our Vision for Metro Bike Share
Lyft brings unparalleled bikeshare experience to Metro Bike Share with hardware and software that powers some of the largest and most successful systems in the world. We envision tens of thousands of Angelenos enjoying a congestion-free commute, pedaling effortlessly on the world's most popular bikes. Our proposal for the next phase of Metro Bike Share includes the core elements that will make bikeshare even more successful in LA County:
Award-Winning EBike: Our best-in-class ebike doesn't just delight riders — it delivers measurable results. In the past year alone, this same model drove a 63% increase in ebike ridership across Lyft’s US markets, demonstrating both its popularity and effectiveness.
Innovative Charging Infrastructure: Our proven in-dock charging stations are currently operating in over 20 cities globally, including bikeshare leaders like Barcelona, Montreal, Chicago, and New York City. Charging stations ensure consistent ebike availability for riders while eliminating the need for battery swaps, significantly reducing vehicle miles traveled and unnecessary operating costs.
Enhanced Mobile App: Drawing on 15+ years of bikeshare expertise, Lyft will develop a more intuitive Metro Bike Share app with seamless unlocking options — including QR code scanning and integration with Metro's TAP Card system — making the service more convenient for all riders and fostering wider adoption.
Our Commitment to Los Angeles
Lyft’s global bikeshare expertise is matched by our team’s deep commitment to Los Angeles communities. Our proposed Metro Bike Share approach anchors on community engagement with trusted local partners who bring invaluable community knowledge and experience, including:
Arellano Associates: A certified Disadvantaged Business Enterprise (DBE) with extensive community engagement experience, including Metro projects like the Sepulveda Transit Corridor and Coordinated Plan Update, Arellano Associates will lead community engagement, with a particular focus in Equity Focus Communities.
BikeHub: The current Metro Bike Share operations subcontractor and a certified DBE, will serve as our lead operations partner, facilitating a smooth transition for the existing workforce under BikeHub’s management and continuity of service for riders.
BikeLA: With deep knowledge of the issues facing bicyclists in Los Angeles, BikeLA will provide bike education and safety classes to empower more residents to confidently use Metro Bike Share and navigate LA's growing bicycle network.
"Arellano Associates is excited to lead community outreach and engagement for the next phase of bike share in LA, in partnership with Lyft and LA Metro. Our approach is rooted in justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion, and we look forward to using these principles to bring Metro Bike Share to more Angelenos than ever before." - Genoveva Arellano, President and CEO of Arellano Associates.
"As one of the founding partners of the Metro Bike Share system, BikeHub takes pride in our contribution to this important transportation program. Alongside our dedicated TWU workforce, we're committed to providing reliable operations and maintenance services for years to come." - Gene Oh, BikeHub CEO
Looking Forward in Los Angeles
We're excited to be a partner to Metro in helping to shape the future of mobility in Los Angeles, ensuring bikeshare plays a part in making it easier and more enjoyable for everyone to get around. This is especially important as LA prepares to host major global events like the World Cup, the Super Bowl, and the Olympics. We envision Metro Bike Share playing a central role in these events, offering a convenient and sustainable way for residents and visitors alike to:
Connect to venues: Easily reach stadiums, event spaces, and fan zones without the hassle of traffic or parking.
Explore the city: Discover different neighborhoods and attractions, experiencing the vibrant culture of Los Angeles.
Get around sustainably: Choose an eco-friendly transportation option that reduces congestion and emissions, contributing to a greener Olympic Games and a healthier city for all.
Link with public transit: Seamlessly combine bike share with Metro buses and trains, creating efficient multimodal journeys across the region.
We're committed to working with Metro and the community to ensure Metro Bike Share is a world-class system that meets the needs of Angelenos and showcases the best of LA to the world, and we are ready to get to work.
