Halloween rush hour: How to beat it, where it hits and how to get home

Sasha Bulatskaya - Oct 30, 2026

Halloween is one of Lyft’s busiest nights of the year, with about 25% more rides than a typical Friday night. With this year’s Halloween falling on a Saturday, expect busy streets and packed parties. Nationally, ride requests peak between 9 p.m. and midnight, but every city is different — Seattle and Washington D.C. get busy early while New York peaks around 1 a.m.

The easiest ways to beat the rush are to schedule your ride home early, request pick-up away from the crowded areas, and avoid leaving when the heaviest traffic hits.

Your plan: How to get home on Halloween

  • Check rush hour traffic before you head out the door.

  • See which neighborhoods get the biggest crowds, and decide if you want to join the crowds or avoid them.

  • Choose your pick up spot for the ride home ahead of time.

  • Schedule your Lyft ride so it’s waiting for you when you’re ready to go.

Halloween rush hour, by the hour

Halloweekend can last an entire weekend in college towns, but the city that never sleeps sees some of the biggest crowds of ghosts and goblins. No surprise, given that over 2 million revelers headed to Manhattan for the famous Village Halloween Parade in 2025.

But you don’t have to call NYC home to get stuck in a Halloween traffic jam. Check out some of the busiest times for Lyft across the country on October 31st.

The pregame wave

The first wave of people head out between 7 - 9 p.m. for parties and pregames, especially in Seattle and Washington D.C. If you call these cities home, you might start the night off early. Usually, this is a great strategy for beating the crowds, but if everyone else has the same idea, you’ll still be stuck in traffic.

The night owls

This is peak party time for Halloween festivities. Ten o’clock through midnight is the busiest time of the year for Lyft drivers in many cities. Houston, Denver, and San Francisco see some of the heaviest traffic around those times.

The so-late-it’s-early shift

Big cities with big crowds party longer, with New York parties peaking from 11 p.m. - 1 a.m. A smaller wave of riders heads home around 3 a.m., with about 6.4 percent of riders ending their night at the time.

How to beat the rush: Pickup spots and timing

If you’re in a busy area, walk a block or two away from the crowds to make it easier for your driver to find you. You can also schedule your ride ahead of time or request pickup on the early side, so you won’t have to wait. As long as you have a plan, you’ll be a lot less stressed out on one of the busiest rideshare nights of the year.

Costume-proof your ride home

To make sure your costume doesn’t get in the way of your ride, follow these guidelines:

  • If you’re wearing large wings, inflatables, or large-scale props, a Lyft XL ride might be the best option to make sure your costume fits inside the car.

  • Use Lyft messenger to tell your driver what you’re wearing so they can spot you easily.

  • Face paint is a great way to create a quick Halloween look, but it could interfere with your phone’s unlock function if you have facial recognition turned on. Go to your settings to make sure you can unlock your phone with a password as well as Face ID.

Halloweekend on campus: expect big crowds

Going out with your friends off campus? So are thousands of other college students. Young adults go out and spend more on Halloween night, so it’s no wonder college towns are packed.

How to get a free or discounted Lyft ride if you’re in college

See if your school offers Ride Smart — a program that lets schools offer free or discounted rides to students. Ride Smart benefits, pick up and drop off locations vary school-to-school, so be sure to check with your college for details.

It pays to schedule your ride ahead of time. Our prices change based on many factors, including how many people are requesting rides at the same time. Scheduling allows you to lock in a price before demand picks up.

Make a game plan before going out

Many Americans say that Halloween is their favorite holiday, so much so that 58 percent want to declare it a national holiday. But, nothing can ruin the mood like a long and inconvenient ride home. While you can’t plan for everything, knowing the busiest times on Halloween and a few rideshare tips could help you ride in style and comfort.

Halloween rush hour FAQ

How do I get home safely after a Halloween party?

To help make sure your ride is comfortable and enjoyable, here’s what you can do:

  • Once your driver arrives, check the license plate and make sure it matches the plate in the app. Never get in a rideshare if the license plate does not match the one listed in the app.

  • Share your trip with a friend or family member so they can follow your journey home.

  • Never drink and drive. DUI cases tick up on Halloween and the last thing you want to be dealing with is a fine, or worse. Order a Lyft or catch a ride with a friend to avoid putting yourself and others at risk.

Is it hard to get a rideshare on Halloween?

That depends on many factors. If there are lots of people requesting rides at the same time, it can be harder to get a rideshare. People requesting in busy areas might have to wait longer for a ride.

How do I get a ride home fast on Halloween?

The fastest way to get home on Halloween depends where you are and the transport options in your area. Scheduling your ride ahead of time could help you get home faster. Setting your pickup location a block or two away from busy areas could help too.

Can a teen ride a Lyft on Halloween?

For riders between the ages of 13 - 18, we offer Lyft Teen – a rideshare with extra driver safety checks and features that allow parents to monitor the trip. Find out if Lyft Teen is available in your area.
