Under the Hood

Growing out & up - going global our way

Jeremy Bird - Jun 8, 2026

Key highlights:

  • Lyft is growing “out” – offering more rides in more places and operating on six continents and in thousands of cities.

  • Lyft is growing “up” with more types of mobility offerings, driven by the acquisitions of Freenow by Lyft, Gett UK, and TBR Global Chauffeuring.

  • Partnership – not disruption – with cities, policymakers, and local communities is key to Lyft’s growth philosophy.

  • Lyft’s global footprint was started by Lyft Urban Solutions, which operates or powers 55+ bikeshare systems in across 14 countries.

For years, Lyft has shown up for people – the reliable ride to work, the easy way home after a night out, the trusted app making everyday life a little smoother across North America. That foundation means everything to us. And now, we're making some pretty big moves that will expand that foundation around the globe.

When my team and I look at our growth strategy, we think in two directions: “out” and “up.” “Out” means expanding our geographic reach; “up” means expanding what Lyft can offer at every level. Both are happening right now: we're growing from your neighborhood rideshare app into a global, multi-mobility platform that meets people wherever they are, however they want to move.

Within the next 12 months we will have one global app for all of our rideshare, taxi, and micromobility options. Starting later this summer, we will begin rolling out the ability for North American riders to use their Lyft apps in over a dozen major cities across Europe. It's a transformation rooted in one simple belief: transportation should work for everyone, everywhere.

We have a clear philosophy about entering new markets: earn the right to operate, not demand it. We work with the current system in a region or city and see policymakers as partners in advancing transportation. You can see this in how we’re collaborating with the community in Nashville to build out our new AV depot with Waymo, partnering across Europe to reduce financial barriers and ease access to charging to help electrify the taxi fleet, and in how we continually stand up for taxi drivers in Ireland fighting against unclear rules and unexpected tax burdens. In the end, it’s all about making sure we stay customer obsessed, focusing on the people who really matter: riders and drivers.

How we’ve grown

A big part of how we've made that real is through Lyft Urban Solutions (LUS). Beyond rideshare, we've been quietly powering some of the most beloved bikeshare systems across the globe. You might know us as the team that operates New York City's Citi Bike, San Francisco's Bay Wheels, and Chicago's Divvy — and our technology powers 55+ programs across 14 countries, including Montréal's iconic BIXI system, London's Santander Cycles, and many more across the Americas, Europe, and the Middle East. When it comes to multi-modal transit, we're all in.

We've also welcomed some exciting new faces into the Lyft family. With Freenow by Lyft, Gett UK, and TBR Global Chauffeuring now part of our ecosystem, we've taken a genuine leap onto the world stage. It’s not only a business move, either - when I visited the teams in Barcelona, Glasgow, Hamburg, and London, I was met by team members who not only bring a wide range of international perspectives, but already shared the same values as the Lyft team members in North America.

Adding Freenow introduces us to new markets across Europe and deep relationships with cities, and adding Gett UK doubles down on our presence in London. Yes, bringing more taxis and private hire vehicles (what we call rideshare in the US) into the ecosystem is a big deal on its own. But at Lyft, we want to enter and operate in cities the right way - making sure we are working closely with the people who we are there to serve, helping them connect to the people and places they love. Europe is an important part of our strategy to get right – that is part of why Thomas Zimmermann, currently CEO of Freenow, now sits on our Purpose Driven Team (what Lyft calls its executive leadership team).

In Europe and beyond, TBR serves globally-recognized brands for their business travel. More than business travel 365 days a year, TBR is also behind many of the rides to events like the Super Bowl, Formula 1, Fashion Weeks, and financial roadshows - serving 16 of the top 20 global investment banks. With TBR, we’re learning from service levels that truly obsess over customers and raise our bar. Having TBR as part of the Lyft ecosystem adds new-to-us cities like Singapore and Tokyo, across six continents – everywhere except Antarctica. Together, we're connecting more people to more rides — and bringing our growing luxury offering to riders who want the very best. It's a bigger Lyft, with more to offer at every level.

Where we’re going

What’s next? We’re doing the work for Lyft to grow “out” and “up.” We’ve already started growing “out,” serving more rides in more places - and more easily for riders and drivers through one, unified, global platform for PHV/rideshare, taxis, and micromobility. We’ve been integrating the teams on both sides of the Atlantic, bringing together everything from mapping teams, to marketplace management, to marketing to create one truly global Lyft team.

We’re also looking at what growing “up” means. It’s taking our already excellent Lyft Black, Black SUV, and XXL offerings and leveling them up. We are working hard to bring more black car and professional driver options to new cities. This part of our business is already taking off, with rides increasing in the first three months of 2026 compared to last year.

Above that, TBR has brought on the ability to flawlessly manage high-complexity and high-profile transportation. We’re talking about one of the highest levels of service across the chauffeuring industry; TBR being able to leverage Lyft’s tech expertise will let us grow that business.

Many companies talk about global scale and combining forces as simply as a logo swap. We’re building it the harder way - market by market, relationship by relationship - and pulling the best from each company’s offering. Looking ahead, we're focused on what matters most: making sure your morning commute, your weekend escape, and your next trip abroad can all run seamlessly on Lyft. And we're gearing up for AV deployments in Dallas, London, Nashville, and beyond.

The road ahead is wide open – and we can't wait to take it together.
