At Lyft, we believe mobility should open doors. That idea sits at the center of everything we do, and it's the animating force behind one of our longest-running commitments: the Lyft Up Voting Access Program. This Election Day, we're offering discounted rides to the polls and partnering with nonprofits across the country to close the transportation gap at the ballot box, because for more than a decade we've worked to make sure a ride is never the reason someone doesn't make it to their polling place.
"Getting to the polls is one of the most meaningful ways we get to shape our shared future, and no one should be shut out of that because they don't have a reliable way to get to the polls," said Jerry Golden, Chief Policy Officer at Lyft. "This program exists because we care about the people behind every ride, and we want every one of them to have the chance to be heard."
Why this matters
Transportation is one of the most overlooked barriers to voting. Research from professors at Harvard and Boston University found that voters with access to a car turned out at a rate 30 percentage points higher than those without one in the 2018 general election. That gap doesn't fall evenly — it hits older voters, people with disabilities, students, and lower-income communities hardest, the same groups who are often already navigating the biggest barriers to being heard. A missed ride can mean a missed vote.
We estimate that almost 4 million riders have used Lyft to find a rideshare driver to go to a polling location, drop off their ballot, or go to a voter registration drive or related event. This cycle, we're building on that with VOTE26, a public discount code, plus targeted support for the organizations working hardest to close the gap.
Preload the code, VOTE26
Load VOTE26 into the Lyft app before Tuesday, Nov. 3, for 50% off (up to $10 off) on a ride to your polling place. It works on rideshare, bikeshare, or scooter rides, from 5 AM to 10 PM local time, wherever you are.*
Who's showing up
Reaching every voter takes more than one code — it takes partners who already have trust in the communities we're trying to serve. This year, we're working with a coalition of nonprofits and civic organizations, including:
League of Women Voters and VoteRiders, who are helping voters understand ID requirements and navigate registration deadlines, backed by ride codes for anyone who needs a hand getting there.
“Sometimes the biggest barriers to voting aren’t about whether people want to participate, they’re about whether they can get there,” said Celina Stewart, CEO of the League of Women Voters. “That’s why partnerships like ours with Lyft matter. When we remove practical barriers like transportation, we make it easier for more people to participate in our democracy. We’re helping make sure that when voters are ready to cast their ballots, they have one less thing standing in their way, and one more reason to get to the polls and make their voices heard.”
Asian and Pacific Islander American Vote (APIAVote) and the National Council on Aging, providing discounted rides to AAPI communities and older voters across the primaries, early voting, and general election.
National Down Syndrome Society and the National Coalition for Homeless Veterans, ensuring the disability community and veterans have a way to get to their polling place.
“Voting allows veterans to maintain a voice in the democracy they served. For those experiencing or at-risk of homelessness, something as basic as transportation can become a barrier to exercising that right,” said Kathryn Monet, CEO of National Coalition for Homeless Veterans. “We’re grateful to partner with Lyft on this nonpartisan initiative that ensures transportation isn't another obstacle to civic participation for veterans who already navigate significant challenges.”
The Students Learn Students Vote Coalition, distributing ride codes to community college and university students, and When We All Vote, powering turnout campaigns like Party at the Polls in communities across the country.
We're also amplifying Vote Early Day, recognizing member companies' voting-friendly policies through the Civic Alliance, and recruiting the next generation of poll workers — including Lyft employees — through Power the Polls.
