Helping Drivers Offset the Cost of Gas

Supplemental earnings for every ride

Recent gas price increases are making all types of transportation more expensive. And this has a direct effect on drivers. So, starting next week, Lyft is adding a $0.55 fuel surcharge to each ride that’ll go directly from riders to drivers—100% of it. This will help offset fuel costs, which also helps more drivers stay on the road. Drivers can expect these additional earnings for at least the next 60 days.

Cash-back on gas

We’re also offering other ways for drivers to get money back into their pockets. In the U.S., drivers can apply for a Lyft Direct debit card and get an increased 4-5% cashback on gas through June 30. And most drivers can also get cash back through our Lyft Rewards partnership with Upside.

We’ll continue monitoring gas prices, listening to how drivers are being impacted, and finding ways to support them as things evolve.

FAQs

  • Are there any locations where drivers won’t receive this rider fuel surcharge next week?

    • New York City just raised the minimum earnings standard for drivers by 5.3% in early March due to increased expenses, so the surcharge will not apply there.

  • Where can drivers see this addition to their earnings?

    • Drivers will see the $0.55 additional earnings in each trip receipt, as well as in their earnings summary.

  • Will EV drivers receive these additional earnings too?

    • Yes. Our long term commitment to electric vehicles means that, in addition to lower fuel and maintenance costs, we want drivers with EVs to have the same earning opportunities with Lyft.

  • What happens with shared rides?

    • Drivers will be paid the $0.55 fuel surcharge for each pickup, in the select cities where shared rides are available.

  • Can drivers combine cashback from both Lyft Direct and Upside?

    • Yes. Drivers—who have both the Lyft Direct debit card and are eligible for Upside in their city—can link their Lyft Direct card in the Lyft app, then pay with it at participating gas stations to earn cashback from both.

The Lyft Direct Mastercard® debit card is issued by Stride Bank, N.A. Member FDIC, pursuant to a license from Mastercard International. Subject to eligibility. Rewards subject to change.
