Before becoming a driver, James Kornblum had a long career in hospitality. He’s bartended, waited tables, and helped celebrities at the Austin-Bergstrom International Airport.
Over the years, James has learned a few things about customer service — and they’re paying dividends. Not only have riders rated him one of the friendliest drivers in Austin, but he’s also in the top 20% for tips.
What’s his secret? Nailing the early morning rush to the airport.
Here are James’s top 5 tips for great service — at the airport and beyond.
Always greet customers warmly — and use their first names. “Before you even get to the car, my window’s down, saying, ‘[Rider’s name], I’m James. I’m your driver today.’ ”
When a rider’s going to the airport, greet them outside the car — and offer to assist with any luggage. “I'm waiting outside my car so I can go grab the bags for you. I’ll ask, ‘Hey [name], I’m James. I’m your driver. Is it OK if I start taking your bags to the car?’ Most people say yes. I don’t think a lot of drivers do that because most people seem surprised.”
Once on the journey, try to find a point of connection with the rider. “I try to make a magic moment,” says James. “Some people, the connection is just that they wanna be quiet, and I let them know if there’s anything I can do for you, let me know. More air, less air, anything at all. But if they wanna conversate, I have a conversation with them. Sometimes people want to talk.”
Upon arrival at the airport, hop out quickly to assist with any luggage — and raise the luggage handle. “I say, ‘Hey [name], I’m gonna jump out, get your bags all set. Take your time, anything you need, let me know.’ And then I’ll unload. If you raise up the handle so somebody could just grab it and start rolling and go, they don’t have to do it. It’s just a little thing, but it makes people smile. That, ‘Hey, this guy’s going out of his way.’ ”
Leave them with a fond, personal farewell. “A fond farewell is, ‘Thank you so much, [name]. I hope you have a great day.’ Something to that effect. It’s always a little different, but along those lines.” It makes an impact. Indeed, as one rider wrote in Kornblum’s review: “He drove me to the airport early in the morning, and he was one of the nicest drivers I ever met. I really appreciate his kindness!”
