Two drivers share their spookiest stories

Katherine Conlisk - Oct 23, 2025

It’s dark when L.A.-based driver TJ Roberts picks up his passenger. As they near their destination, the rider instructs TJ: Don’t go around the massive graveyard ahead, but rather through it — she’s headed to a wake. Following her instructions, he pulls in. The passenger’s deep in her phone. “She’s not really paying attention to the screen on the Tesla,” recalls TJ, “but I am. And then I start seeing people pop up.”

For those who don’t have a Tesla, the center console screen displays real-time visualizations of the car’s surroundings: things like people, other cars, and traffic lanes. It’s showing TJ four or five people, some riding bikes, others walking dogs — but when TJ looks around outside, he sees only an empty graveyard lit up by his headlights. “I don’t think I drove for like a week after that … that was just too creepy,” TJ says.

TJ’s not the only driver with spooky stories to share. “I’ve had about a 17-year career as a bellman, doorman, and bell captain,” says Scott B, who drives with Lyft in Portland, Oregon, “and pretty much all the hotels are haunted or have spirits.” Scott recalls one paranormal night when he worked at a historic hotel in Denver: A couple was woken up at 1 a.m. when the adjoining door began jostling violently. They asked their neighbors about it the next morning. “The people in the room had no idea what they were talking about,” Scott finishes eerily.

You could then say that Scott was the perfect driver to pick up three passengers on a business trip, who were moving from one hotel to another five blocks away. When Scott asked why, one of the riders replied that it was due to all the supernatural activity. The woman told Scott that she was hyper-sensitive to spirits, that they would always find her and vie for her attention — to the point where she couldn’t get any rest. “I believe them 100%. Otherwise, you wouldn’t uproot your colleagues to change hotels!”

So, if you are feeling brave this October, ask your Lyft driver if they have any spooky stories to share. You might just get a good one.
