$500 Million Toward Your Goals, and Extra Acts of Kindness From Grateful Passengers

The Lyft community reached an important milestone this week: drivers have earned over $500 million in tips. Since day one, tipping has been an important way for passengers to show their appreciation for everything you do. Whether it’s sharing good stories, playing great music, or helping passengers keep track of lost phones, you consistently go the extra mile.

The Lyft community has been feeling grateful since the very beginning, and as our community has grown, so have our tips. More than half of all tips were given in 2017 alone.

As many of our drivers have learned over the years, passengers sometimes share their gratitude with extra special acts of kindness. You’ve received donuts, flowers, slices of pizza, tickets, and even a snare drum. To celebrate your $500 million in tips, we’re shining a spotlight on some of these acts of kindness, as well as a special tip we recently gave to four drivers.

The Ultimate Tip: Studio time + Demi Lovato advice. We know you’re driving to reach important goals, and we’re grateful to be included in your journey. To say thank you to four drivers — who are also aspiring musicians — we surprised them with a visit from Grammy—Award nominee Demi Lovato, VIP tickets to her show in Miami, and studio recording time. See the surprise:

Here are some of the extra special ways your passengers have thanked you:

  1. A Los Angeles driver received tickets to Game 7 of the World Series between the Los Angeles Dodgers and the Houston Astros.

  2. A Boston driver received tickets to Jay-Z’s 4:44 tour, which he noted was, “the best tip EVAH.”

  3. A Nashville driver was grooving out to “God’s Plan” when he discovered his passenger shared a love for Drake as well. The passenger happened to be en route to a symphony mash-up featuring Drake and Tchaikovsky. To the driver’s surprise, the passenger invited him to join her and they rocked out.

  4. A San Francisco driver was added to the VIP guest list for a private Chainsmokers concert thanks to a grateful passenger.

  5. A North Carolina driver received tickets to a New Kids on the Block show, which she attended with her passenger.

  6. A Chicago driver was navigating to her drop-off at a Kanye West concert when the couple in her backseat broke up mid-ride. The ex-boyfriend got out of the car, and the passenger brought the driver to the show instead.

  7. A Portland driver took home a Google Mini from a passenger who wanted to support his dream to build voice apps for the elderly.

  8. A San Diego driver who joined Lyft to support her son’s college education was gifted airline rewards to visit her son and watch him play in a college football game.

Half a billion dollars in tips is an impressive number, but the gratitude of the Lyft community can’t always be quantified by a dollar amount. Thank you to all the drivers who provide excellent experiences to every person who enters their cars. As we strive to reach $1 billion in tips, we look forward to hearing about the inevitable acts of kindness to come.
