As of February 2020, sign-ups are currently closed but we will share more updates and information soon.
Since the process for transgender drivers to change their name and gender on legal documents is complex and varies by state, we’re partnering with the National Center for Transgender Equality (NCTE) to offer legal support and resources to drivers who are transitioning.
Transgender and non-binary drivers who have completed more than 100 rides on the Lyft platform will quality for multiple hours of one-on-one advising from NCTE, as well as $200 in financial assistance to help them cover the cost of name change fees.*
NCTE advocates to change policies and society to increase understanding and acceptance of transgender people. In the nation’s capital and throughout the country, NCTE works to replace disrespect, discrimination, and violence with empathy, opportunity, and justice. We also encourage anyone who is transitioning to use NCTE’s free ID Documents Center.
Since 2017, we’ve worked with NCTE on matters of transgender equality, leaning on their expertise to guide our inclusivity mission. We’re more than excited to expand our partnership with them to provide transgender drivers the services they need.
* Working closely with our Lyft driver loyalty team, we determined the 100 ride driver requirement in order to ensure we are serving dedicated drivers, without being too restrictive so we are able to support those who seek assistance. $200 is the base amount for a drivers license change fee in the United States. Fees may vary between states, with some higher, but none are below this rate. We worked closely with the National Center for Transgender Equality to determine the amount that could be a consistent and beneficial amount for support across the country. Lyft will provide advising and financial support for the first 75 drivers who apply and, if we receive additional interest, we will explore formalizing and expanding the program. This offer is valid through the end of 2019.
