At Lyft we see the future as one in which car ownership is optional, and where cities are designed for people instead of cars. With shared rides, bikes, scooters, and transit information all available on the Lyft platform, people have more choices than ever before for how to get around their communities. We are committed to prioritizing safety and efficiency for everyone on the street through partnerships across the public and private sector. Today, as a part of this vision and commitment, we are thrilled to announce we’ve been invited to join the steering committee of the National Complete Streets Coalition, the preeminent national group working to make our streets safe for people of all ages and abilities by people and place through the planning, design, construction, operation, and maintenance of our transportation networks.
“Lyft is proud to be a multimodal transportation network company and looks forward to bringing expanded transportation options and safer streets to all communities,” said Lilly Shoup, Lyft’s Senior Director of Transportation Policy. We look forward to the work we can do together with the National Complete Streets Coalition to support stronger, greener, and healthier communities.”
“We’re proud to welcome Lyft to our national steering committee and affirm our shared view that we need to design and build our streets for people as the overarching consideration, however they choose to get around,” said Emiko Atherton, director of the National Complete Streets Coalition. “With the number of people struck and killed while walking hitting levels not seen in nearly 30 years, it is imperative that we bring a range of voices to the table to talk about how we can stem the tide of these preventable deaths through safer street design, and we’re delighted to have Lyft join the Coalition.”
The National Complete Streets Coalition, a program of Smart Growth America, is a non-profit, non-partisan alliance of public interest organizations and transportation professionals committed to the development and implementation of Complete Streets policies and practices. A nationwide movement launched by the Coalition in 2004, Complete Streets is the integration of people and place in the planning, design, construction, operation, and maintenance of transportation networks.
Lyft is proud to join the ranks of these exceptional leaders who continue to promote the development and implementation of policies and professional practices that ensure streets are safe for people of all ages and abilities, balance the needs of different modes, and support local land uses, economies, cultures, and natural environments.
At Lyft, we believe we are about to witness the largest change to our cities and physical environment in a generation - less traffic, more pedestrian areas, more bike lanes. Some of this will be new space, but we also think some of it will be a reutilization of the spaces we have created exclusively for cars, and we look forward to working with the National Complete Streets Coalition to identify opportunities and pursue policy that makes our streets safer and more accessible for everyone.
