Lyft Expanding ‘Green’ Mode to Help Connect Riders with Electric and Other Lower-Emission Vehicles

Apr 6, 2023

Lyft is committed to reaching 100% electric vehicles (EVs) on our platform by the end of 2030.

To connect more riders with EVs and other sustainable vehicles, we are expanding “Green” mode to select cities across the country beginning April 17. Riders with a Lyft business profile will be the first to gain access to “Green” in the coming weeks and can request an EV or hybrid vehicle directly from the Lyft app for their next trip.

“We’ve seen an explosion of interest in EVs — and once a driver or rider gets into an EV, they’re more likely to prefer them moving forward. By rolling out ‘Green’ across the country, we can nudge riders to take more sustainable forms of travel, helping us reach our shared climate goals sooner and ultimately reducing our carbon footprint faster. It’s a win/win for riders, drivers, and the communities we serve,” said Paul Augustine, Lyft’s Director of Sustainability.

“Green” is currently available in Portland and will initially expand into 14 new markets, including San Francisco, Seattle, Los Angeles, Silicon Valley, Boston, New York City, Chicago, San Diego, Washington, D.C., Austin, Denver, Orange County, Sacramento and Phoenix. Anybody with a work email in these markets can set up a Lyft business profile in minutes and order a green ride in the app as the service rolls out to their area (instructions below).

This expansion builds on recent announcements from Lyft that make the platform more sustainable and the benefits of EVs more equitable. In December, we unveiled a new suite of offerings and partnerships aimed at helping drivers switch to EVs. This included a new ride challenge for drivers in California, discounts on charging, and expanded EV inventory for our Express Drive rental program. And in January, Lyft Business launched a new reporting tool to help partners track their total emissions on the platform.

We are taking a holistic approach to sustainability and environmental justice by helping drivers transition to electric vehicles, riders take more sustainable forms of travel, and businesses reduce their carbon footprint. We expect to make further strategic investments and continue advocating for smart policies to help us all achieve our climate goals.
