Lyft Preferred: A New Ride Type to Reward Top Drivers (Like You)

A Lyft driver taking a break

From your high rating to your car’s extra legroom, you provide an elevated experience for your passengers, and now you can earn bonuses for it. Select drivers (like you) are now participating in a pilot of Lyft Preferred — a new type of ride for passengers who want to pay a little more for a newer car, a little more legroom, and a top driver.

If you give a Lyft Preferred ride, you’ll earn a bonus on top of your regular ride payment. You’ll be able to see if a ride is Preferred before you tap ‘Accept.’

To stay eligible, you’ll need to meet the following criteria:

  • A driver rating of 4.9 or higher

  • A minimum of 300 lifetime rides

  • A newer car (2014 or newer)

  • 37” or more of legroom

  • No flags for an unclean vehicle in your last 20 rides

  • You’ll need to be in one of the cities where we’re testing Lyft Preferred

These criteria are subject to change. We want to hear what you think about Lyft Preferred — we’ll reach out to get your feedback in a few weeks.

What do I have to do to opt in?

Nothing. Nada. Zilch. If you received an email from Lyft, you’re already in! The pilot will last about two months, and eligible drivers have already been selected. If you’re one of them, you’ll receive Preferred rides during the pilot period as long as you maintain your eligibility.

Why was I selected as a Preferred driver?

To get Preferred ride requests, you must meet all the eligibility criteria: a driver rating of 4.9 or higher, a minimum of 300 lifetime rides, a car that’s 2014 or newer and has 37” or more of legroom, no flags for an unclean vehicle in the last 20 rides, and you’ll need to be located in one of the cities where the pilot is currently running.

Is the pickup experience different for Lyft Preferred rides?

Lyft Preferred rides work just like other rides — the only difference is the cash bonus drivers receive.

Are drivers expected to act differently in a Lyft Preferred ride?

Passengers in a Preferred ride are paying a little extra for an elevated ride experience and may have an important occasion for the ride, like a celebratory dinner, a concert, or a business meeting with VIPs.

Drivers who are selected for the Lyft Preferred pilot have already demonstrated that they’re top-notch drivers. If you’ve been selected for the pilot, just keep doing what you’ve been doing to earn that high rating. Be yourself — you’ve got this.

How do I know if a ride is a Preferred ride?

Drivers will be able to see when a ride is Preferred before accepting the ride.

Then, drivers will receive the following notification after completing a Lyft Preferred ride and dropping off a passenger: “You just got $$$ more by giving a Preferred ride.” Once the pilot period ends, we’ll evaluate additional ways to inform drivers when they’re giving a Preferred ride.
