Partnership Delivers Its First AV Fleet Deployment in Major U.S. Market
ATLANTA, GA – [September 10, 2025] – Lyft, Inc. (NASDAQ: LYFT) and May Mobility, Inc. today announced the launch of their autonomous vehicle (AV) pilot program in Atlanta, marking the first public autonomous vehicle deployment for the partnership.
The collaboration introduces Atlanta riders to cutting-edge autonomous technology through a measured, safety-first approach that prioritizes human experience and community trust. The service will initially launch as a pilot program available to Lyft riders in the area, with plans to expand service hours and vehicle availability in the months ahead.
A New Chapter for Rideshare
This partnership represents a significant milestone for both companies, combining Lyft's customer-obsessed approach with May Mobility's proven autonomous driving technology. With this rollout, Lyft and May Mobility bring commercial autonomous vehicle rides to Midtown Atlanta and surrounding areas, strengthening the region's position in transportation innovation while expanding May Mobility's presence in the Southeast.
Through the Lyft app, riders will now have the opportunity to match with one of May Mobility’s autonomous vehicles if they request a standard or Wait & Save ride within the service area. The autonomous vehicles will operate around the Midtown area, including Virginia Highlands, Old Fourth Ward, and Inman Park. The fleet consists of hybrid-electric Toyota Sienna Autono-MaaS vehicles equipped with May Mobility’s patented Multi-Policy Decision Making (MPDM) technology.
“We're bringing the future of transportation with May Mobility to Atlanta while staying true to our core mission - connecting people and communities,” said Jeremy Bird, Executive Vice President at Lyft. “Our human-centered approach to autonomous vehicles is giving Atlanta riders access to tomorrow's mobility today - with the same safety and community focus that defines Lyft, and the proven technology from May Mobility.”
The Lyft Ride You Love, Now Autonomous
The partnership prioritizes rider comfort and confidence through several unique features designed to ease the transition to autonomous transportation. Riders will have access to temperature controls during their ride, and following May Mobility’s standard approach to autonomous vehicle launches, initial deployments include a standby operator present in each vehicle to assist the AV in some circumstances and help acclimate riders to autonomous driving technology.
Standby operators are fully trained to take the wheel and drive manually during initial trips, as needed, and will intervene less over time as service is optimized. They will also answer questions and monitor vehicle operations to prioritize a safe and comfortable ride before eventually transitioning the service to driverless operations.
“Our launch with Lyft marks a pivotal moment in the AV industry as we work together to bring driverless operations to Atlanta as part of our goal to deploy more AVs onto the platform over the coming years,” said Edwin Olson, CEO and founder of May Mobility. “AVs are a real solution to the many mobility challenges people face today, and it won’t be long before anybody can get anywhere in a May Mobility AV.”
This launch in Atlanta is May Mobility’s second active operation in Georgia, highlighting the region’s innovation in transportation. The company operates a driverless service in Peachtree Corners, with public, on-demand rides along Technology Parkway. The microtransit service is in partnership with Curiosity Lads and T-Mobile.
Proven and Advanced Safety Technology
At the core of this partnership is May Mobility's patented Multi-Policy Decision Making (MPDM) platform, which provides active monitoring, vehicle guidance, and predictive capabilities. This technology offers multiple layers of safety protection and redundancies to deliver one of the most comprehensive safety approaches in the autonomous vehicle industry.
The MPDM platform's sophisticated decision-making capabilities apply human reasoning to every situation with AI-powered speed and precision, helping each vehicle navigate complex urban environments found in Atlanta. MPDM achieves high safety performance by analyzing thousands of potential scenarios every second and then choosing the optimal maneuver in any situation. MPDM easily adapts to any new scenario or environment, even “edge cases,” an approach that has proven itself in deployments across the U.S. and Japan, including driverless operations in three cities. This technology foundation, combined with May Mobility's millions of commercial autonomous miles, provides Atlanta riders with a proven autonomous vehicle experience.
Economic and Community Impact
With more than $90 billion expected to be invested in transportation improvement and mobility projects across the region by 2040, this autonomous vehicle deployment represents a strategic component of Atlanta's comprehensive transportation transformation. Atlanta's selection as the inaugural market for this partnership reflects the city's and state’s growing reputation as a center for transportation technology advancement.
"Georgia represents an ideal market for autonomous vehicle technology," said Rep. Matt Reeves (R-Duluth), Chairman of the House Insurance Rate Study Committee. "This partnership demonstrates how innovative companies can work together to enhance transportation options while maintaining community trust and safety as top priorities."
The collaboration also creates opportunities for local workforce development and positions Atlanta as an attractive destination for technology companies seeking to deploy innovative transportation solutions.
Looking Forward
Both companies plan to expand the partnership based on community feedback and operational performance, with potential for additional markets and enhanced service offerings. The Atlanta deployment serves as a model for how autonomous vehicle technology can be responsibly introduced to communities while maintaining focus on human experience and safety.
