What is Bike Angels?
Bike Angels is a members-only rewards program that allows Bay Wheels riders to earn credit and rewards for picking up and dropping off bikes at designated stations throughout the city. As a Bike Angel, members ride bikes from crowded stations to stations that are running low on bikes. In return, those rebalancing rides will add up to rewards in your account.
If you’re passionate about Bay Wheels, this is a great chance for you to be a part of something – and get rewarded for it!
Note: the program is only available in San Francisco and the East Bay currently.
Amazing! How do I sign up?
Becoming a Bike Angel is easy.
Head into the Bay Wheels app (the option is not available yet in the Lyft app) and click on the three horizontal lines in the top left corner.
Then, tap on “View Profile”
Under “Account Settings,” you’ll see a section that says “Bike Angels” with the blue logo next to it.
Hey, presto! You’re signed up.
Okay Cool…How does it work?
As a Bike Angel, you’ll see little arrows above each station icon on the Bay Wheels map. Some will have an arrow pointing down with a number, and others will have an arrow pointing up with a number. A station that has an arrow pointing up means that it needs bikes to be picked up from there. A station that has an arrow pointing down means that it needs bikes to be dropped off. The number next to the arrow indicates the amount of points you get for either picking up or dropping off, depending on which direction the arrow is pointing.
If the arrow you see is pink, then the station under the arrow is a “high-value” station, which may offer extra points for a pick-up or drop-off.
Some stations will also stay neutral, meaning you get no points for either pick-ups or drop-offs. There will be no arrow on neutral stations.
Check back though, Bike Angel points are dynamic so a station that is neutral at mid-day might have points in the evening.
Once you sign up and start seeing points on your Bay Wheels map, it’ll take just a few seconds of quick math to see how you can make the ride you were already going to take - to work, coffee, to see a friend — earn you rewards.
What Kind of Rewards Can You Get?
The list of available rewards can be seen in your app! You can receive ebike credits, credits that can be redeemed for Lyft ride share, and even a Bay Wheels membership extension!
As you rack up points, you can also receive “lifetime achievements” and earn a Bike Angels water bottle, bike gloves and even a backpack!
You can also receive brownie points, rack up points on the Bike Angels Leaderboard, and race the Bike Angel community to the top.
