Bay Wheels has become an essential part of the transportation network in the Bay Area—with over two million rides already this year.

Now, thanks to public funding provided by the Metropolitan Transportation Commission, and in partnership with the cities of San Francisco, San Jose, Oakland, Berkeley, and Emeryville, we’re pleased to announce our largest program expansion in five years. We’re rolling out some exciting updates to make biking easier and more affordable than ever. You'll see new ebikes in San Francisco and San Jose starting today and across the East Bay in the coming months, pending local approval.

New perks for members

  • Save $19 on annual membership. Starting November 2nd, the cost of a Bay Wheels annual membership will be reduced from $169/year to $150/year.

  • Reduced ebike per-minute fees. We’re lowering the fee to $0.15/min for annual , monthly and Lyft Pink members, so you can save on every trip. Ebike per-minute fees for single rides and Bikeshare for All will not change.

  • Save on monthly memberships. Starting November 2nd, Bay Wheels monthly members can begin counting their consecutive monthly renewals toward an annual membership. When you renew your monthly membership for five months in a row, your sixth month will be just $5 and you’ll be automatically transitioned to an annual plan at no additional cost. Once your annual membership is up, you’ll go back to a monthly plan.

Here’s what you can expect

  • An expanded ebike fleet. We’re adding hundreds of docked next-gen ebikes to our system. By next spring, almost half of our entire fleet will be ebikes.

  • More stations for easier docking. We’re adding new stations, including ebike charging stations, to our network. Since next-gen ebikes don’t have a cable lock, they’ll need to be docked at a Bay Wheels station. Check our social channels for input and new installations.

  • A new docked reservation feature. You’ll be able to reserve a docked ebike for up to 10 minutes. Per-minute fees apply.

Updates on fees

  • We’re changing our fee waiver and fee cap zones in San Francisco. Find the new maps here.

  • Virtual Stations. We’re adding virtual stations which are groups of bike racks that show up in the Bay Wheels and Lyft apps as free parking zones for our hybrid ebikes with a cable lock.

Thanks for being a valued member of the Bay Wheels community. See you in the bike lane.
