Introducing Lyft Astro and Lyft Metro: The Next Generation of Bay Wheels Bikes in San Francisco

Lyft Urban Solutions is thrilled to announce the pilot of our latest bike models in San Francisco this summer. Building on our experience providing bikeshare technology to over 55 systems worldwide, these new bikes combine everything we've learned about what riders love and what cities need. This pilot introduces two new vehicles—the Lyft Astro pedal-assist ebike and the Lyft Metro classic pedal bike. These bikes will be hitting the streets of San Francisco in June as part of a pilot of new devices.

Lyft Astro: The Lighter, Smarter Ebike

The Lyft Astro is our latest pedal-assist ebike, and it's built for every rider. Its compact frame makes it easy to mount and maneuver through city streets. We have piloted these in small numbers in San Jose, and now we will be bringing them to San Francisco for the next stage of the pilot.

Lyft Metro: Reimagining the Classic Pedal Bike

The Lyft Metro is our reimagined classic pedal bike that modernizes the classic riding experience. It comes in two versions, the Lyft Metro and the Lyft Metro Flex. While both offer smooth handling, the key difference is in the smart technology available on the Lyft Metro Flex:

  • Lyft Metro: This version does not have the handlebar screen or smart features and is functionally similar to a classic pedal bike today.
  • Smart Connectivity (Lyft Metro Flex): This new "smart" pedal bike features GPS, rear-wheel immobilization for security, and a handlebar screen.

The Lyft Metro bikes are dock-only, mirroring the existing classic pedal bike experience.

How to Spot the Difference

We want to make sure it is easy to know which bike you are selecting. The bikes will be easily distinguished by different decal colors, Lyft Astro (ebike) in white and Lyft Metro (classic pedal bike) in black.

  • Lyft Astro (Ebike): These will be easily distinguished by different decal colors than the Metro, and they feature a large lightning bolt decal on the battery housing, clearly indicating it is an e-bike. The app and the handlebar screen will also show the battery range.

  • Lyft Metro (Classic Pedal Bike): The Metro VCU screen will call it out as a "Classic bike". Both versions of the Metro will have a pop-up in the app to inform you that you are riding a new classic bike.

Ready to Ride?

Keep an eye out for Astro and Metro bikes as they start rolling out on the streets of the Bay Area in the coming weeks. We are looking forward to bringing the next generation of bikeshare to you!
