Yes. Your driver’s license, insurance, registration, and shipping address must match the state you’ll be driving in. This is currently the case for all applicants, including students and members of the military.
Exceptions include some Chicago, Boston, DC, and Charlotte drivers with licenses in specific bordering states. Even in these cases, your driver’s license and registration state must match each other, no matter what.
To apply, download the Lyft app onto your smartphone, and tap the white car icon at the top right.
There are a few steps toward becoming an approved driver for your region! The app will walk you through a series of screens where you'll be prompted to enter all of the necessary information.
You can also apply via your web browser by going to lyft.com/drivers and following the steps on the website.
The next steps will include a test drive with a Lyft Mentor, and both a background and a DMV record check.Back to top
You sure can! All of your information will be saved, even if you quit the app completely.Back to top
After you input all the necessary information and watch the welcome videos, you'll be ready to take a test drive with a Mentor. Mentors are seasoned drivers in the community who can help you get a better feel for what it's like out on the road.Back to top
Make sure you're within the designated coverage area in the correct time frame. Once there, all you have to do sign into driver mode by tapping the car icon again, and you'll receive a ride request from a Mentor. Use the "navigate" button to go to your Mentor's location. They'll inspect your car, take pictures of your license and insurance, show you how to schedule hours, and take your driver photo. Then you'll take them on a short drive. That's it! If you're approved to become a driver, you'll hear from Lyft and can get out on the road for your first Lyft! You'll receive your welcome kit, including the 'stache, in the mail after completing your first 30 rides!Back to top
Mentor rides can occur anytime between 7 am and 6 pm, seven days a week.Back to top
