Hawaii Driver Information

This page provides information about vehicle, driver, and document requirements, state regulations, insurance coverage, and city-specific requirements, needed to drive with Lyft in the state of Hawaii.
To apply to drive in Hawaii, submit an application online or in the Lyft Driver app –– download it from the App Store (iOS) or the Google Play store. To be approved to drive, applicants must meet these requirements.

What you need to drive with Lyft in Hawaii
Drivers are required to maintain current documents. Failing to update a required document before the expiration date results in temporary deactivation.
Use your Lyft Driver app or Driver Dashboard to upload your documents. To add documents in the app, tap 'Account' in the main menu, then 'Documents.
Vehicle requirements
  • 2008 or newer
  • 4 doors
  • 5-8 seats, including the driver's
  • Not a taxi, stretch limousine, or non-Express Drive rental vehicle
  • Honolulu: No trucks
  • Not titled as salvage, non-repairable, rebuilt or any other equivalent classification

In select cities, you can rent a car through Express Drive with standard insurance included. Rental vehicles must be rented through the Express Drive program to be approved for use on the Lyft platform.

Emblem requirements
Drivers in Honolulu are required to display the Lyft emblem on their front and rear bumpers while in driver mode. The Lyft emblem is Lyft’s official trade dress. It helps passengers and law enforcement identify your vehicle.

If you’ve just been approved to drive, you should receive your Lyft emblem shortly. If you didn't get one or need a new one, place an order in your Lyft Driver app or Dashboard. While waiting for it to arrive, you may print a temporary emblem.

Hourly driver mode limits
In Hawaii, Lyft’s standard time limit for driver mode applies.
Standards for Honolulu drivers
  • Drivers must not transport more passengers than the number of seatbelts available in the vehicle, nor more luggage than the vehicle will safely and legally allow
  • Drivers must not operate a vehicle that has not been approved by Lyft
  • The Revised Ordinances of Honolulu prohibit trucks from being used on the Lyft platform
  • Drivers must have proof of insurance in their possession at all times
  • Drivers must follow Lyft’s lost and found policy and procedures
  • Drivers must allow the Honolulu Department of Customer Services to inspect their vehicle upon request
  • Drivers must not consume alcohol while on duty or less than eight hours prior to going on duty
  • Drivers may not have alcohol in the vehicle, unless that alcohol belongs to the passenger
  • Drivers must comply with any written notice of violation issued by the Department of Customer Services
  • Drivers may not drive for Lyft with a suspended or revoked license, or with an expired registration or otherwise invalid inspection sticker
  • Drivers must surrender their Lyft trade dress upon notification that they are no longer authorized to drive for Lyft
  • Drivers must operate their vehicles with due regard for the safety, comfort and convenience of passengers
  • Drivers must not use their vehicle for any unlawful purpose while driving for Lyft
  • Drivers should use the most cost effective and direct route unless directed otherwise by the passenger or when an emergency situation, such as a road closure, requires an alternate route
  • Drivers must keep their vehicles clean and may not litter
  • Drivers must not use offensive language or gestures while driving for Lyft
  • Drivers must not smoke while passengers are in their vehicle
  • Drivers must, upon request by the Department of Customer Services or a police officer provide their driver certification, vehicle certificate, and any other documents requested for inspection
  • Drivers must not operate an electronic, digital or GPS device in a vehicle without a hands-free mount and in hands-free mode
  • Drivers must not sublease or permit another to operate their private transportation vehicle as a private transportation driver
  • Drivers must not refuse to transport any person except when, upon arrival at the place of pick-up, the passenger is acting in a disorderly or threatening manner, or otherwise is acting in a manner that would cause a reasonable person to believe that the drivers health or safety, or that of others, may be endangered.
Private Transportation Driver and Vehicle Certificates
Your private transportation driver and vehicle certificates can be found in your Lyft Driver app under the 'Your Vehicles' and 'Settings' sections. You may be required to present the certificates for inspection at the request of local law enforcement.
To view your private transportation driver and vehicle certificates:
  1. Open your Lyft Driver app and go to the main menu.
  2. Tap 'Vehicle and Devices,' then tap 'Vehicle' to access your vehicle certificate
  3. Tap 'Account, then tap 'Settings' to access your driver certificate.
Hawaii GET Tax License

Vehicles with beds
Lyft passengers must always be seated inside vehicles during rides. Passengers may not ride within vehicles’ trunks or beds. It is a violation of Lyft’s Terms of Service for drivers to transport more riders than can be safely seated inside a vehicle.

  • Don't wait in taxi lines
